Why fleas come back after treatment
The cat flea is the species found on most cats and dogs, and it bites people too. UC IPM's flea guide explains why a house can seem flea-free and then fill up again.
- Larvae develop only in sheltered spots with at least 75% relative humidity, feeding on dried blood and waste from adult fleas: pet bedding, carpet and resting areas.
- Pupae are the reason fleas seem to return. At cool temperatures, adult fleas can stay in their cocoons for up to 12 months, and warmth or the pressure of footsteps or a vacuum makes them emerge. Sprays don't kill pupae, so fleas can keep appearing for about two weeks after treatment.
- Vacuuming kills larvae in carpet and picks up adults. Seal and throw away the bag so fleas can't escape.
- The most effective indoor products contain the insect growth regulator methoprene or pyriproxyfen. Outdoors, treat where pets rest and sleep, such as kennels, under decks and along the foundation. Treating the whole lawn is rarely necessary.
- Treat the pet as well, with a product your veterinarian recommends. Products containing permethrin or amitraz should never be used on cats.
