Yellowjackets and carpenter bees
Yellowjackets and carpenter bees are the two stinging insects people most often need dealt with at home, and they call for different fixes.
- Yellowjackets often nest in old rodent burrows, and sometimes in wall and ceiling voids. A colony starts each spring from one queen and can reach 1,500 to 15,000 individuals, depending on the species.
- Colonies normally last one season. They get more defensive as the season goes on and food gets scarce, and by fall the foragers are scavengers at picnics, trash cans and pet food.
- An underground nest can sit some distance from the visible entrance, so a spray at the hole may not reach the colony. Wasps are most likely to be in the nest at night, but stings are still likely after dark, and UC IPM says hiring a professional reduces the risk. Lure traps cut the number of foragers nearby but don't eliminate a large population.
- Carpenter bees look like bumble bees but have a shiny black tail section. They bore round, half-inch holes, usually on the underside of a board, with galleries that run 6 to 7 inches and can exceed a foot.
- Males have no stinger and females rarely sting. Serious damage usually takes many bees drilling over successive years, and woodpeckers may tear into infested wood after the larvae.
- NC State Extension's treatment is an insecticidal spray or dust in the entrance holes, then each hole sealed with a small ball of aluminum foil and caulk after 24 to 36 hours. Painted and treated wood is less attractive to them, but not immune.
